I’ve been working a LOT more hours (much more than I expected) since I promoted. The boys are (predictably) more clingy.
I was hoping the Sneaky Chef thing would be more of a series than it actually is. I do believe the people able to sneak this stuff past their kids are NOT parents of a supertaster. To be quite frank, the only thing he’s actually eaten a tablespoon of was the breakfast ice cream I blogged about, and the ONLY reason he kept tasting it was because I let him say “more chocolate. More sugar. It still doesn’t taste right, maybe how about more chocolate?” After that, I decided not to jack with his list of “approved” foods. The absolute last thing I need is him refusing to eat any foods at all because “it didn’t taste right that one time”.
Tomorrow I’ll be touring an apartment. I’m not thrilled with the idea of apartment living in any way, shape, or form again (I need a few hundred yards between my neighbors and me for complete comfort) but we neeeeeeeeed to move while The Folks ™ and I are still on friendly terms. And I’m gently freaked about moving (again) in general.
The semester is about to start, and I’ve been nailbiting, reviewing notecards, and trying to schedule study time around my New! Improved! work schedule.
My dating site profile is still pulled. I’m thinking it’ll stay permanently pulled. The problem with the gene pool is there’s no lifeguard.
I miss my friends in the box… I promise I’m reading!
This morning I made the Sneaky Chef’s Extra Sneaky Chocolate Breakfast Ice Cream. The texture was perfect, the recipe as written was downright awful. With only 1/2 teaspoon of unsweetened cocoa powder to color an entire 1/4 avocado and a frozen banana, the result looked as if it belonged in a diaper, not an ice cream bowl.
Obviously, this would need a bit of work before he saw it, much less tasted it.
I added a tablespoon of cocoa powder, another pinch of sugar and FINALLY got it “brown” enough to be chocolate ice cream. Then I asked Daniel to taste it and tell me if it was “chocolate enough”. For 20 minutes we went back and forth, adding another teaspoon here and a tablespoon there. The good news is he kept helping me taste it and try to “fix” it so he could have ice cream for breakfast. The bad news is he never said “it tastes good, can I have it in a bowl/cone/whatever”.
Side note: those “soft bite” baby spoons make GREAT “tasting” spoons. He already knows it’s a “baby bite” of something, not a “big boy bite” and is more likely to be cooperative.)
Finally, frustratedly, I gave up and made him a jelly biscuit. The “ice cream” is in the freezer; I’m not sure what to do with it at this point. Maybe add in some vanilla?

So I’ve read, looked through, and otherwise educated myself as to the ways of being a Sneaky Chef. The plan is simple: to keep the foods he already eats. Toward that end, we’re going to try her Quick Fix for Boxed Mac and Cheese, Quick Fix for instant pudding, the Brainy Brownies Recipe, and to use her flour blend recipe for breads and pizza/cheese sticks.
Tonight, I finish making the purees and making sure I’ve got everything else. Tomorrow, the white bean puree will be gracing his boxed mac & cheese, an avocado is currently melding its flavor with boxed pudding, and I may just give him Breakfast “ice cream” if I can get the blender to get it smooth enough.

(Re)Gained: peanutbutter and honey sandwiches. Lost: Chicken Noodle Soup - “It has hard chunks innit.”
It’s officially guerrilla warfare in my kitchen. I’ll sneak bean puree into his mac & cheese, I’ll sneak spinach and blueberries into his brownies. Pumpkin milkshakes will carry flax oil. Yes, there’s more to the list, and I’m sure a cook-along will be in there somewhere.
Downside? He won’t be able to “help” cook. Getting nutritious food into him is more important. He can always learn to cook later.
I got Missy Chase Lapine’s “The Sneaky Chef” from the library. Depending on how this series of events turns out, I’ll probably end up purchasing it.
Stay tuned!
